The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception

The Basilica is the largest Catholic Church in North America. It is located on Catholic University’s property in the Brookland neighborhood of D.C., about a 7-minute drive from Lincoln’s Cottage. Whether you are religious or not, this architectural phenomenon is worth a visit. Construction began in 1920, and it was completed in 2017; almost 100 years. In 1990, Pope John Paul II declared this national shrine a minor basilica.

Upon approaching the front of the Basilica, the entrance is at the bottom right side of the staircase. I recommend taking a tour as the guide will provide you with a rich history of the place. If you choose to not take a tour, check out the main church as well as all of the chapels underneath it; you will find steps inside on either side of the main church. Parking is FREE across the street (facing the church, the parking lot is to the left).
