Roanoke
My dad and I briefly drove through this town during my cross-country road trip. We went to the Blue Ridge Visitor’s Center and without hesitation they recommended we go to the Roanoke Star. If you stay for more time here than we did, there are some amazing hikes nearby.
What to Do
Roanoke Star
Roanoke, VA is known for the 100 ft. Roanoke Star (or Mill Mountain Star), built in 1949. It was implemented because Indians originally named the valley Shenandoah, or “daughter of the stars.” You can drive to the top of the mountain in Roanoke to get to the second-largest illuminated star in the world.
Blue Ridge Visitor’s Center
The Blue Ridge Visitor’s Center gave us good information on what to do in our short drive through Roanoke. I recommend going here for more information as they were very helpful for us!
Hiking
Roanoke’s Triple Crown of Hikes are: Dragon’s Tooth, McAfee Knob, and Tinker Cliffs. I recommend this website for more information.
*Road trip route from here: Prior to Roanoke we started out in Baltimore, MD. After Roanoke, we headed to Pigeon Forge, TN.
