History

The cottage is located in D.C. in the Petworth neighborhood on the campus of the Soldier's Home, known today as the Armed Forces Retirement Home. President Lincoln would come to the cottage to escape from the stresses of his life as president. He could never truly "escape," as he wrote the Emancipation Proclamation here.

Lincoln's Cottage Museum

The museum is located next to the cottage and really brought life to the experience. I recommend going to the museum first to understand the significance of this place. It explained what life was like back then and the power of the movement at the time.

The exhibit in the museum was dedicated to parents who have lost a child/children, as President Lincoln and his wife Mary Todd Lincoln lost all four of their children. It was an emotional experience and was very powerful to walk through. It really brings to light those who have gone through such grief and loss.
