Canton
In 1785, Captain John O'Donnell settled in Baltimore along the water in the inner harbor, currently known as Canton. German, Irish and Polish communities lived in the town, and large industrial companies made their way here in the 19th century. Now, Canton is known for Canton Square on O'Donnell Street, Waterfront Park, and Patterson Park.
What to Do
Canton Square
Canton has numerous bars and restaurants scattered around the town. Many of which are congregated at Canton Square on O'Donnell Street. Our favorites are listed below in the "Where to Eat" section.
Patterson Park
Patterson Park is on the northwest side of Canton. This land has been used as a park since 1853, after William Patterson offered up some land to the city to re-create the parks he had seen in Europe. On the west side of the park is an Observatory designed by Charles H. Latrobe in 1890. You can go into the observatory for a few hours on Sundays during the warm weather months.
Canton Waterfront Park
Come here for a nice picnic, or a walk along the waterfront promenade. During summers, this area celebrates the first Thursday of every month with food trucks and live music.
Ministry of Brewing
The Ministry of Brewing is a brewery inside of an old church in northern Fells Point. The St. Michael's Catholic Church building was built in 1857, and closed in 2011. The brewing company on the location opened in late 2019, right before the pandemic hit. They have endured the numerous shut-downs and are doing well sustaining with the capacity rules made by the city. Upon entering on site, it was very impressive that they kept the architecture and design of the inside of the church. The kegs were where the altar would be in the church, which makes for an interesting conversation piece. The beer was great too :)
Where to Eat
El Bufalo
In Canton Square, El Bufalo has delicious food and drinks of Mexican, Spanish and South Western influence. They have some of the best tacos and margaritas in the city.
Southern Provisions
Also in Canton Square, Southern Provisions has southern fare with a hint of Baltimore. They even delight with southern hospitality! We enjoyed their draught beers and apps and recommend the crispy deviled eggs with crab meat.
Bmore Licks
One of the best ice cream shops in town is Bmore Licks, which is at the southwestern corner of Patterson Park. My favorite is their chocolate fudge brownie in a waffle cone.
