Tombstone
Tombstone is a classic old western town best known for the gunfight at O.K. Corral on October 26, 1881. The movie, Tombstone, depicts the events surrounding this famous gunfight, with legends Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp. My cousin and I visited here for a part of my cross-country road trip. This leg of the tour was from Dallas to Phoenix. Tombstone has lots of charm and things to do. I recommend spending one full day here.
What to Do
Historic Allen Street
The main street in Tombstone is Allen Street, which is where you will find the O.K. Corral, many restaurants, shops, carriage rides, and scenic Arizona views.
Mock Gunfights
Just 1 block away from the main street is the old western town area. At multiple times throughout the day, there are mock gunfights here reenacting the famous fight at the O.K. Corral.
Boothill Graveyard
Only outlaws were buried here starting in 1883. Also here is a separate Jewish cemetery. It costs $5 to enter the cemetery.
The Birdcage Theatre
The Bird Cage Theatre was used as a theater from 1881-1894, and was open around the clock for eight of those years. It was known as the "wickedest" theater from New Orleans to San Francisco. During this time, 26 people were killed here, with 140 bullets still stuck in the building. Hence, this building is suspected to be haunted. You can do a self-guided tour here during the day, or a nightly ghost tour at night.
Where to Eat
Big Nose Kate’s Saloon
We had a delicious dinner and drinks at Big Nose Kate’s Saloon along with their daily live country music. I recommend the cactus cooler featured drink! Big Nose Kate was Doc Holliday’s on and off again girlfriend.
*Road trip route from here: Prior to Tombstone, we were in Valentine, TX. After Tombstone, we headed to Phoenix where we visited family and I picked up my aunt at the airport. From Phoenix, my aunt and I went to Sedona, AZ.
