Best Breakfast Burrito
The best breakfast burrito (BBB) was what I strived to find during my time in Santa Cruz. There are many people here who would stand strong behind their favorite breakfast burrito place. So, I made an effort to truly find the best! Many places have breakfast burritos, but I decided where I went based on word of mouth and research. I have learned from eating lots of breakfast burritos here that my taste of this type of food favors a combination of vegetables, eggs, and some type of meat to add more to the palate. Also, the SAUCE has to be full of flavor. Here are my top 2!
1) Picnic Basket in Santa Cruz
The first place I went to for breakfast burritos was recommended by my landlords. It is across from Santa Cruz’s main beach and the wharf, on Beach Street. Due to its beach vibes and palm trees casting a shadow on you, it is the most ideal setting for a west coast breakfast burrito. Scenery puts some big points on my “report card.” When ordering at the front counter, they ask “do you want to add bacon and avocado?” Just say yes. The wait for the burrito is about 20 minutes, but order an iced vanilla latte with oatmilk, or their homemade house chai to help you bide the time while sitting outside and people watching. Then, as you eat the burrito, the flavor is overwhelming and you will notice it melting in your mouth. The green salsa-type of sauce adds even more to the palate. My taste buds thank you Picnic Basket!
2) Cafe Rosalena in San Jose
One of my patients highly recommended Cafe Rosalena as the best breakfast burrito place. I went here and saw that a lot of other people think it is as well, since it showcases on a sign that it is rated as being the best. There are a few different types of breakfast burritos you can get here, but I always get here the Veggie Florentine with sausage, and the orange (medium) sauce. Here, the sauce wins, and the enormity of the burrito! They also have fresh-squeezed orange juice to keep your taste buds happy throughout the entire experience. As it is in San Jose, I typically would take my friends here as our first stop after arriving at the airport from out of town. I would like to think it kicks off their time here with a great start. Also, be ready for a long wait after you order the burrito here. This should give you (and hopefully your friends) time to catch up (maybe after a long flight).
