Long Weekend Getaway to Deep Creek Lake

Every year, our family goes to Deep Creek Lake, MD for a long weekend of family bonding time. This year, we kept it small due to Covid with just my parents, aunt, grandmother, and me. We loved our cozy cottage-feel rental home called Lake Reflections, complete with a hot tub! Before we arrived, we all made sure to have a negative covid-test. The free drive-through was easy and painless at the Savage Fire Hall’s testing location in Savage, MD.

Herrington Manor and Swallow Falls Parks

Dad and I love to kayak at the big lake, and also at Herrington Manor Lake. The latter is a quaint area of town that has swimming, and lots of places to picnic. You can also camp here. Mom joined us for a short kayak ride, too. On the way to Herrington is this very strange art piece. Swallow Falls State Park is also on the way to Herrington. It has a beautiful 1.5-mile trail along the water. Costs $3/person to get into the state park. The waterfalls are spectacular.

Food

The only place we ate outside of the house was at Mountain State Brewing Company. We love this place! It has lots of pizza options, beer, salads, and sandwiches. Our favorites on the menu were the apple butter pulled chicken sandwich and the pizza called fire on the mountain. They had a few outdoor seating options, all with beautiful views of the mountains in the background. Lakeside Creamery is also a go-to at Deep Creek. They have tons of ice cream flavors and a great view of the lake.

Other things to do

To fill up our time, the ladies and I went shopping at Bear Creek Traders. We also kept it simple inside with puzzles and had bonding time with Mommom by playing Kings in the Corner, Mexican Train, and Scrabble.

We like to drive around and dream of the houses with views that we will never purchase. I also ran along the water early in the morning and spotted several animals. Fortunately, I did not run into a bear 🙂 Since it rained most evenings, we made our s’mores indoors. Until next year, Deep Creek!
